Ikat or Ikkat is a word derived from the
Indonesian word mengikat which translates to ‘to tie’ in English. Ikat is the
process of resistance dyeing that is used extensively in textile industry to
create patterns. It is a process similar to tie-dye.
While dyeing an Ikat Saree, threads that do not allow
dye penetration are tied in such a way that we get the desired patterns. When
dyeing is finished treads are removed and colorful Ikat patterns are obtained on the saree.
In India the techniques of Ikat
became very popular and it soon obtained local recognition. Pochampalli (Andra
Pradesh) and Bhandhini (Gujrat) are some of the local adaptation of the
original Ikat design.
Silk is a natural protein
fiber that is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of silkworms. This fiber
can be woven into one of the world’s finest fabric, silk. Silk was first
developed in Ancient China in 3500 BC.
But today India is the second largest producer of silk after China. India is also the largest consumer of
silk. A Silk Saree is considered as
auspicious and is worn as a symbol of royalty.
Contemporary Ikat sarees and Silk sarees:
Ikat and
silk sarees
have been given a modern touch to help it gain worldwide acceptance. These age
old processes of fabric processing have under gone a tremendous change in terms
of design.
An Ikat Saree now has more vibrant in colour, the patterns are finer
and the techniques now more advance to produce more complex designs. Similarly
the silk saree also has evolved over
time. It is now finer, softer, more lustrous, the designs modern and newer
techniques to dye.
There is also the Ikat Silk Saree, where the process of Ikat dyeing is used to dye silk fabric. An Ikat silk saree is has very attractive colours, a very fine fabric
and a very graceful appearance. This saree is the culmination of one of best techniques
of dyeing and the best hand woven
fabric.
The evolution of Ikat sarees and silk sarees with time to suit the modern day
needs of the world has not only helped them maintained their position in the
ever changing cycles of style and fashion but has also helped it develop as a
trend setter.
